Thames groundwater situation: 13 May 2025
Updated 19 May 2025
Applies to England
Current situation
Groundwater levels are dropping following a prolonged period of settled weather across the Thames catchment.听听
Despite the decline, groundwater levels remain high for the time of year in the Henley and Assendon area of Oxfordshire. A groundwater flood alert is currently in place for this area. This will be removed when levels drop further.聽
Groundwater levels also remain high in the West Berkshire areas of the Lambourn Valley, Leckhampstead, Great Shefford, East and West Illsley, Chilton and West Hagbourne.聽
Consequently, cellars and low-lying land could continue to be impacted. Some fields and gardens could remain waterlogged; roads and footpaths could have puddles on them despite a lack of rainfall. These impacts should reduce over the coming weeks as levels continue to fall.聽
This will be the final briefing note of the 2024 to 2025 recharge season. The Environment Agency will continue to monitor groundwater levels and will issue groundwater flood alerts as/when needed.
