On 18 May 2018 Ofqual formally issued OCR with a notice explaining our intention to fine it 拢175,000.

The proposed fine follows an error which affected assessments for OCR鈥檚 GCSE English Literature qualification in the 2017 summer series. OCR鈥檚 assessment was not fit for purpose because a question about Shakespeare鈥檚 play 鈥楻omeo and Juliet鈥 which should have referred to 鈥榯he Montagues鈥 instead referred to 鈥榯he Capulets鈥.

We have delayed publication of the notice until after GCSE and GCE examinations for 2018, in accordance with our usual policy not to make significant announcements during that period.

Interested parties now have the opportunity to make representations in respect of our proposal to fine OCR 拢175,000. Representations should be addressed to Matthew Humphrey, Ofqual鈥檚 Director of Legal Moderation and Enforcement, by email to [email protected].

Representations must be made before 4pm on 16 July 2018.
