Getting help
If you cannot get the support you need from local services, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) can help British people abroad.
We prioritise emergencies and people who are vulnerable, for example, if someone鈥檚:
- ill, injured, or involved in a crime
- with a British person who鈥檚 died
Get an emergency travel document
You can apply for an emergency travel document if you鈥檙e abroad and your passport has been lost or stolen, damaged or expired, and you can鈥檛 get a new or replacement passport in time to travel.

If the person needing the emergency travel document is under 16, a parent or guardian should apply on their behalf.

Official documents and services we provide
Commonwealth countries are not able to offer notarial services, like certifying a copy of a document or making an affirmation. If local authorities ask for proof of this, you can download a聽letter that confirms notarial services are not available.
