Tax your vehicle without a vehicle tax reminder
You can tax your vehicle without a vehicle tax reminder letter (V11), email or text message using a:
- V5C registration certificate (logbook) in your name if you鈥檙e the current keeper
- V62 application for a registration certificate if you鈥檙e the current keeper
- green 鈥榥ew keeper鈥� slip if you鈥檝e just bought the car (and do not have a V5C in your name yet)

If you do not have a V5C or new keeper slip
If you鈥檙e the current keeper, you must apply for a replacement V5C. You can tax your vehicle at the same time.聽
You can tax your vehicle at a Post Office, if you prefer.
If you鈥檙e the new keeper, you cannot tax your vehicle without a new keeper slip. You鈥檒l need to apply for a new V5C by post. You can also get the form from the Post Office.
A new V5C costs 拢25.
Pay online
You can tax your vehicle online if you have:
- the 11 digit reference number from your V5C (if you鈥檙e the current keeper)
- the 12 digit reference number from the new keeper slip if you鈥檝e just bought the car (and do not have a V5C in your name yet)
Pay by phone
You need to contact DVLA to tax by phone. You鈥檒l need your V5C (logbook) or new keeper slip when you call.

Pay at a Post Office
You can apply at a that deals with vehicle tax.
You鈥檒l also need one of the following:
- your V5C registration certificate (logbook) in your name
- a V62 application for a registration certificate if you鈥檙e the current keeper
- a new keeper slip if you鈥檝e just bought the car (and do not have a V5C in your name yet)
You may also need:
- payment for your vehicle tax
- evidence of a current MOT - for example, a screenshot of your vehicle鈥檚 MOT history or your MOT certificate, if you have one
If you鈥檙e in Northern Ireland
You also need to take:
- an MOT certificate that鈥檚 valid when the tax starts
- an insurance certificate or cover note
Set up a Direct Debit at the Post Office
You鈥檒l also need to bring your address, date of birth and your bank or building society account details if you鈥檙e setting up a Direct Debit to tax your vehicle.
