Scrapped your vehicle or it's been written off
You need the 11 digit reference number from the latest vehicle log book (V5C).

Destroy the log book, unless you鈥檝e already given it to the vehicle scrapyard or insurance company.
Use the vehicle scrapyard or insurance company鈥檚 name as the trader you鈥檝e sold the vehicle to, even if you did not get any money for it.
You can take the registration number off the vehicle if you want to keep it. You must do this before you tell DVLA you sold your vehicle.
What happens next
You鈥檒l be sent:
- an email confirmation (if you gave your email address)
- a letter confirming you鈥檙e no longer the keeper of the vehicle
- a refund cheque for any full months left on your vehicle tax, calculated from the date DVLA gets your information - if you pay by Direct Debit, it鈥檒l be cancelled automatically
Other ways to apply
If you have a log book you must get the scrapyard or insurance company to fill in the yellow 鈥榮ell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade鈥� section. Send the perforated section to DVLA.

If you do not have a log book
You must write to DVLA with:
- your name and address
- the vehicle registration number
- the make and model
- the exact date of sale
- the name and address of the scrapyard or insurance company

Your notification can be rejected if you do not give all the information. This will also affect any vehicle tax refund you鈥檙e owed.
