Apply to the EU Settlement Scheme

You can apply using any device, for example, a laptop, Android device or iPhone.

If you have pre-settled status already, it will be extended by 5 years just before it鈥檚 due to expire. You鈥檒l be sent an email telling you when this happens.聽

Your extended pre-settled status may be automatically converted to settled status. However, you can still apply for settled status if you want to do this before you鈥檙e automatically converted if you鈥檙e eligible.聽

Who cannot use this service

You cannot use the online service to apply to the scheme if you鈥檙e applying as:

  • the family member of a British citizen you lived with in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein by 31 December 2020 and you returned with them to the UK
  • the family member of a British citizen who is also a citizen of an EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, and they lived in the UK as a citizen of one of those countries before becoming a British citizen
  • the child (who is in education in the UK) of someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein who used to live and work in the UK

You and your child can also not apply using the online service if by 31 December 2020 you were the primary carer of a:

  • British citizen (and you did not have another type of permission to stay in the UK)
  • child of someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein who used to live and work in the UK - the child must be in education in the UK
  • self-sufficient child from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein

If you do not have any of the documents you鈥檒l need to prove your identity, you may not be able to use the online service. Check what you鈥檒l need before you apply.

If you cannot use the online service

Contact the Resolution Centre online to find out how to apply.

They will usually send you an application form. You must send your completed application form and supporting documents to the Home Office by post.

You must not send your form back by email unless the Resolution Centre has told you to do so.

If you鈥檙e applying as the family member or primary carer of a British citizen and you鈥檙e eligible to apply, you鈥檒l be given a form with a unique reference number. You must use this form to apply.

If you鈥檙e not eligible to apply, the Resolution Centre will tell you and you will not be sent a form.

When you can apply from outside the UK

If you鈥檙e from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you can apply from outside the UK if you hold either a valid passport or national identity card with a biometric chip.

If you鈥檙e from somewhere else, you can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme from outside the UK if you have a UK-issued biometric residence card (if it has not expired).

Otherwise, you will need to apply for an EU Settlement Scheme family permit to come to the UK. Once you鈥檙e in the UK you can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme.
