Resources on governance and inclusion

An annotated bibliography of recent reviews and other resources on the relationship between inclusion and governance

Abstract

This report provides an annotated bibliography of evidence reviews and other resources related to governance and inclusion. In particular, it addresses 2 questions:

  1. Whether and how an inclusive society can lead to better governance

  2. What kinds of governance interventions can lead to greater inclusion

Inclusion is a prominent concept 鈥 some say 鈥渂uzzword鈥 鈥 in current international development thinking and debates. The recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promote inclusion 鈥 to 鈥渓eave no one behind鈥 鈥 and place governance at the heart of achieving this. For example, SDG 16 aims to 鈥淧romote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels鈥.

This rapid review provides an annotated bibliography of recent reviews and other resources on the relationship between inclusion and governance. It explores this in 2 parts: looking firstly at the literature on whether and how an inclusive society can lead to better governance, and secondly on what kinds of governance interventions can lead to greater inclusion.
