Data items used in the collection
Table of guidance about some of the data items we use.
The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) closed on 31 March 2025. All activity has moved to the Department for Education (DfE). You should continue to follow this guidance.
We have included guidance for some data items below:

| Federated flag | Federated submission 鈥� Please enter either 鈥楴o 鈥� school is not a federated school鈥�, or 鈥榊es 鈥� school is federated and returning finance data on behalf of other schools in the federation鈥�.聽LAEstab numbers of schools in federation -聽Please enter the LAEstab numbers of schools in the federation for whom you are returning finance data. |
| Data preparation | If the school has been involved in the preparation of the CFR return, please enter 鈥榊鈥�, otherwise 鈥楴鈥�. |
| Data version | This will be an automatic response from the school鈥檚 MIS system. If there are any red errors on the CFR return preliminary will be attached to it, if there are no red errors then final will be attached. |
| Complete | Is this data for a full financial year? 鈥榊鈥� = full year, 鈥楴鈥� = partial year, that is school opened or closed |
| Cash or accruals | Enter either 鈥楥ash鈥� or 鈥楢ccruals鈥� depending on the accounting basis used by the school. |
| Rates exempt | If your school is exempt from rates, then please enter 鈥榊鈥�, otherwise 鈥楴鈥�. |
| Insurance | If your school鈥檚 insurance policies/premiums have been purchased centrally, at no cost to the school, then please enter 鈥榊鈥�, otherwise 鈥楴鈥�. |
