Information on the condition of roads in England, as well as other aspects of highways maintenance in the year ending March 2023.

The data comes from multiple sources including National Highways (formerly Highways England) and local authorities. Some data from local authorities form part of the聽Single Data List, making the provision of data a mandatory requirement.

In the period ending March 2023, local authorities in England reported that:

• 4% of their 鈥楢鈥� road network
• 6% of their 鈥楤鈥� and 鈥楥鈥� road network
• 17% of their unclassified road network

were categorised as red (should have been considered for maintenance).

Of the roads managed by National Highways:

• 5% of motorways
• 7% of 鈥楢鈥� roads

should have been considered for maintenance in period ending March 2023.

Local authorities continue to provide data on a voluntary basis for their amber and green roads with data included for the financial year ending 2023. This information was first published for 鈥楢鈥� roads in the 2019 release, and for 鈥楤鈥� and 鈥楥鈥� roads in the 2021 release.

The statistical release does not present skidding resistance statistics at the local-authority level. This is because the department is currently reviewing how this data is reported to ensure its quality and accuracy.
