Details

Provisional estimates for road traffic in Great Britain for the fourth quarter (October to December) 2013, and provisional annual traffic estimates for 2013.

The volume of traffic across all motor vehicle classes increased by 1.3 % to 306.4 billion vehicle miles in 2013 compared to 2012

Provisional annual figures suggest that:

  • motorway traffic hit a new peak in 2013 with 64.3 billion vehicle miles travelled on these roads across Great Britain compared to 2012
  • Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) traffic hit 42.9 billion vehicle miles for 2013, the highest annual total ever recorded

Comparing October to December 2013 with the same quarter the previous year:

  • all motor vehicle traffic increased by 1.1%, to 77.1 billion vehicle miles
  • car and LGV traffic increased by 1.0% and 3.4% respectively
  • Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) traffic increased by 0.8%
  • traffic volumes increased across all road classifications with motorway traffic (2.2%) and rural minor roads (2.8%) showing the biggest increases
