From December 2023, we have discontinued聽PORT0501聽from the quarterly port freight statistics聽due to low user engagement.聽PORT0501聽presented tonnage and unit totals at the national level as indices. National level tonnage and unit totals will remain available in聽PORT0502.
We continue to welcome any feedback on any aspect of the port freight statistics.
Our statistical practice is regulated by the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR).听OSR聽sets the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics that all producers of official statistics should adhere to. When comparing October to December 2024 with October to December 2023 through UK major ports :听

total freight tonnage increased by 4% to 108.3 million tonnes聽

inward tonnage increased by 5% to 73 million tonnes聽

outward tonnage increased by 3% to 35.3 million tonnes聽

total volume of unitised traffic increased by 2% to 5 million units聽

inward units increased by 3% to 2.7 million units聽

outward units increased by 1% to 2.3 million units聽
When comparing the rolling year to December 2024 with December 2023 through UK major ports:听

total tonnage decreased by 1% to 422.8 million tonnes聽

total volume of unitised traffic increased by 2% to 21.1 million units
