From December 2023, we have discontinued聽PORT0501聽from the quarterly port freight statistics聽due to low user engagement.聽PORT0501聽presented tonnage and unit totals at the national level as indices. National level tonnage and unit totals will remain available in聽PORT0502.
We continue to welcome any feedback on any aspect of the port freight statistics.
Our statistical practice is regulated by the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR).听OSR聽sets the standards of trustworthiness, quality and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics that all producers of official statistics should adhere to. When comparing July to September 2024 with July to September 2023 through UK major ports:聽

total freight tonnage showed a little decrease to 103.2 million tonnes

inward tonnage showed a little decrease to 68.6 million tonnes

outward tonnage showed a little decrease to 34.6 million tonnes
-
total volume of unitised traffic increased by 1% to 6 million units

inward units increased by 2% to 3.2 million units聽

outward units decreased by 1% to 2.8 million units
When comparing the rolling year to September 2024 with September 2023 through UK major ports:聽

total tonnage decreased by 3% to 417.8 million tonnes聽

total volume of unitised traffic increased by 1% to 21 million units
