Details

The latest national statistics on the provisional outturn estimates of local authority revenue expenditure and financing for 2013 to 2014 were released on 28 August 2014 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • total revenue expenditure by local authorities in England was 拢94.9 billion in 2013 to 2014, an increase of 0.8% from 拢94.1 billion in 2012 to 2013
  • 31.8% of total net current expenditure in 2013 to 2014 is on education, 19.1% on social care, 18.6% on mandatory housing benefits and 9.7% on police
  • there were decreases in net current expenditure across most public services between 2012 to 2013 and 2013 to 2014; the biggest decreases were in police services, which decreased from 拢11.3 billion in 2012 to 2013 to 拢10.9 billion in 2013 to 2014, and in cultural, environmental and planning services, which decreased from 拢9.4 billion in 2012 to 2013 to 拢9.2 billion in 2013 to 2014
  • the biggest increases in net current expenditure were in children and families social care services, which increased from 拢6.6 billion in 2012 to 2013 to 拢7 billion in 2013 to 2014, and in adult social care services, which increased from 拢14.5 billion in 2012 to 2013 to 拢14.6 billion in 2013 to 2014
  • in 2013 to 2014 local authorities added 拢2.3 billion to their reserves; in 2012 to 2013, local authorities added 拢2.6 billion to their reserves
