The latest national statistics on the budget estimates of local authority revenue expenditure and financing for 2013 to 2014 were released on 31 July 2013 under arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

• revenue expenditure is budgeted to be 拢102.2 billion in England in 2013 to 2014, an increase from 拢98.4 billion in 2012 to 2013
• 22.9% of budgeted revenue expenditure in 2013 to 2014 is estimated to be funded through Council Tax, 32.8% through formula grant and 43.1% through specific grants inside Aggregate External Finance and Local Services Support Grant; these percentages were 27.1%, 28.2% and 44.4% respectively in 2012 to 2013
• in 2013 to 2014 local authorities are budgeting to draw down 拢1.2 billion from their reserves to finance their revenue expenditure, of which 拢0.4 billion is due to Greater London Authority; in 2012 to 2013 local authorities were budgeted to draw down their reserves by 拢20.7 million
• local authorities are budgeting total net current expenditure of 拢38.8 billion on education services in 2013 to 2014, 拢21.3 billion on social care, 拢20.5 billion on mandatory housing benefits and 拢11.2 billion on police services
• net current expenditure in 2013 to 2014 is not comparable to previous years due to the transfer of public health duties to local authorities in 2013 to 2014, following the Health and Social Care Act 2012; budgeted expenditure on public health services is expected to be 拢2.7 billion in 2013 to 2014
