Reconnecting Britain for our security and prosperity: Foreign Secretary David Lammy's statement

David Lammy outlined his priorities following his appointment as Foreign Secretary on 5 July 2024.

Canciller brit谩nico, David Lammy.

It is the honour of my life to stand before you as Foreign Secretary.聽A descendant of enslaved people. A black, working class, man from Tottenham.聽A community which has never produced a Foreign Secretary before.聽聽

This speaks to what a modern, multicultural Britain can be.聽Proudly internationalist.聽Determined to deliver for working people.聽And committed to building a better future for us all.聽

Britain has enormous potential.聽But the world faces huge challenges.聽More countries engaged in conflict than at any time since World War II.聽聽Rapidly changing technology.聽And a climate emergency.聽聽

This government will reconnect Britain for our security and prosperity at home.聽What happens here in the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is essential.聽Diplomacy matters.鈥

We will begin with a reset with Europe, on climate and with the global South.鈥燗nd a gear-shift when it comes to delivering on European security, global security and British growth.鈥

My story is a story of progress.聽Progress won by all those who fought for a better future.聽聽

Together, let us fight for a better future once again.聽Change begins now.
