Section 153 of the Equality Act gives the government a power to impose specific duties on certain public bodies to help them perform the Equality Duty more effectively.
Draft specific duties regulations were laid before Parliament on 27 June 2011. These were on 11 July 2011 and聽 on 6 Spetember聽2011. The specific duties聽came into force on 10 September, following聽parliamentary approval.
The specific duties apply to English public bodies and the non-devolved functions of GB-wide public bodies.聽 The specific duties聽will help deliver聽better performance of the public sector Equality Duty by reducing bureaucracy, and increasing transparency and democratic accountability across the public sector.
