Details

In March 2011, the government set up an independent review of health and safety legislation to make proposals for simplifying it. This review was chaired by leading risk management specialist Professor Ragnar L枚fstedt.

We published Professor L枚fstedt鈥檚 report 鈥楻eclaiming health and safety for all: An independent review of health and safety regulation鈥 on 28 November 2011.

Professor L枚fstedt鈥檚 report sets out a number of recommendations that will:

  • reduce legal requirements on business that do not lead to improvements in health and safety
  • remove pressures on business to go beyond what the law requires, enabling them to reclaim ownership of the management of health and safety

Government response

We published the Government response to the L枚fstedt Report on 28 November 2011. The response fully supports the Professor鈥檚 recommendations and sets out the next steps for implementation.

Terms of reference

The terms of reference for the review were finalised by Professor L枚fstedt and the advisory panel. They were agreed by the Minister for Employment.

Call for evidence

Professor L枚fstedt and the advisory panel asked all interested parties to provide evidence and examples to help inform the review of health and safety law. The closed on 29 July 2011.
