The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) carries out聽independent investigations聽into complaints and deaths in custody. The detailed roles and responsibilities of the PPO are set out in our office鈥檚聽. PPO has 3 main duties:

• to聽investigate complaints聽made by prisoners, young people in detention (prisons and secure training centres), offenders under probation supervision and individuals detained under immigration powers (detained individuals)
• to聽investigate聽deaths聽of prisoners, young people in detention, approved premises鈥� residents and detained individuals due to any cause
• to聽investigate deaths聽of聽recently released prisoners聽that occur within 14 days of release from prison (except homicide)
