拢22.3 million has been offered to 8 projects that will support the UK鈥檚 nuclear fuel supply chain to develop the capabilities needed to meet current and future fuel demand in the UK and globally.

Among the 8 winning projects, the Nuclear Fuel Fund has awarded:

  • over 拢10.5 million to Westinghouse, Springfields Fuels Ltd in Preston, Lancashire to enable the manufacture of a broader range of nuclear fuel types for GW reactor, small modular reactor (SMR) and advanced modular reactor (AMR) customers in the UK and overseas, boosting jobs and skills in the North West
  • over 拢9.5 million to Urenco聽UK, an international supplier of enriched nuclear materials, to help develop low enriched uranium + (LEU+) and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) enrichment capability at their Capenhurst site in Cheshire. These enriched uranium products are necessary to produce more innovative fuel types, including certain 鈥榓ccident tolerant fuels鈥� to improve the safety and efficiency of current reactors, and to supply future AMRs
  • over 拢1 million has also been awarded to Nuclear Transport Solutions to develop HALEU transport packages which will be necessary to facilitate a HALEU fuel supply chain in the UK and internationally
  • over 拢1.2 million to support MoltexFLEX, a UK molten salt reactor developer based in the North West, to build and operate rigs for the development of molten salt fuel. Molten salt reactors (MSRs) are an AMR type that use a molten salt as a coolant and fuel, leading to intrinsic safety compared with conventional fuels
