1. For action

1.1 Safer start campaign: tools to help your organisation to improve patient flow

The clinically-led (ECIP) was established to offer intensive, practical help to 28 health systems under the most pressure.

As we approach the busy Christmas period, one of ECIP鈥檚 priorities is to improve patient flow: to help with this they鈥檝e launched the which identifies .

We also recommend that all systems look at the campaign - it includes a number of useful tools that could help your organisation to improve patient flow such as each system running a multi-disciplinary accelerated discharge, or breaking the cycle style event in order to safely discharged patients no longer requiring an acute level of care.

1.2 What do you think of the first national whistleblowing policy?

You鈥檝e still got time to share your thoughts on the draft of the first national whistleblowing policy and help us work to encourage a culture where raising issues at work becomes normal practice and where concerns are taken seriously and investigated properly.

Please share this with your staff including local guardians, lead clinicians, non-executive directors (NEDs), and your patients so that all of their views can help shape the final policy.

Thanks to those of you who have already responded; for those who haven鈥檛, you can respond using by 5pm on Friday 8 January 2016.

2. For information

2.1 Agency price caps: your questions answered

The new rules on national price caps for agency staff in the NHS came into place on 23 November. Since then many of you have asked questions on aspects of the new caps including:

  • implementation
  • scope
  • design
  • interaction with the framework rules
  • monitoring and overriding the rules

We鈥檝e provided these answers to your questions which should make it easier for you to put the caps into place in your organisation.

We鈥檝e also developed a diagnostic tool to help you adopt best practice and reduce the use of agency staff; the tool will help you to diagnose issues, decide ways forward and implement improvements quickly. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

We鈥檙e now hosting the Monitor benchmarker (previously the payment by results (PbR) national benchmarker), created by the Audit Commission. This online tool compares detailed acute hospital activity data (based on Secondary Uses Service data) for both providers and commissioners. The tool also includes reference cost benchmarking.
