To apply for a refund of Class 4 National Insurance contributions you can:

• use the online service
• fill in the postal form on-screen, print and post it to HMRC

To apply online, you need a Government Gateway user ID and password. If you do not have a user ID, you can create one when you apply.

If you use the online form, you鈥檒l get a reference number that you can use to track the progress of your form.

Before you start using the postal form

If you鈥檙e using an older browser, for example Internet Explorer 8, you鈥檒l need to update it or use a different browser. Find out more about browsers.

You鈥檒l need to fill in the postal form fully before you can print and post it. You can鈥檛 save a partly filled in form so you should gather all your information together before you start to fill it in.
