Details

The regulation of small industries by local authorities (i.e. councils, unitary authorities and port health authorities) helps to reduce any pollution they may cause and, in particular, helps to improve air quality.

A local authority鈥檚 regulatory role encompasses:

  • the initial authorisation or 鈥減ermitting鈥� of processes;
  • inspecting operational installations;
  • amending or revoking permits, where necessary; and
  • prosecuting operators in those cases where operators fail to comply with regulations.

Defra鈥檚 Local Pollution Control Statistical Survey (LPCSS) provides an overview of each of these aspects of local authority regulation.
