This Ofsted survey report draws on visits to seven secondary schools identified in earlier inspections as effective in delivering cross-curricular improvement in literacy. The visits were carried out in schools across England between June and October 2012.
Soon after his appointment in January 2012, Her Majesty鈥檚 Chief Inspector of Education, Children鈥檚 Services and Skills, Sir Michael Wilshaw, gave a speech in which he declared: 鈥業mproving standards of literacy must be a priority for all our schools鈥. He made a commitment to help improve national literacy standards. He introduced a greater focus on literacy in school inspections. This detailed survey was also published, looking at what works best in secondary schools to improve literacy across the curriculum.
