Highlights - Another good year for HMRC

1. Our year

Lin Homer, HMRC Chief Executive and Permanent Secretary, introduces our 2014 to 2015 Annual Report and Accounts:

It鈥檚 been another good year for HMRC, and we鈥檝e delivered record results in some areas 鈥� although we know that there is still more to do to.

We鈥檝e brought in increased revenues every year since 2010 鈥� a truly fantastic achievement that is due to the thousands of hard-working, dedicated people who work at HMRC.

2. Our achievements

  • a record 拢517.7 billion tax revenue brought in - that鈥檚 拢11.9 billion more than last year
  • 拢26.6 billion raised in compliance revenues - another record
  • reduced our costs by 拢210 million
  • 10.2 million Self Assessment returns submitted by midnight on 31 January 2015
  • a national conversation with our staff at 1,404 events across 78 locations
  • 1 million employers claimed the new Employment Allowance - 85% of all eligible employers

2.1 Revenue

Total revenue increased by 拢11.9 billion, or 2.4%, to 拢517.7 billion.

  • 拢9 billion in tax revenues protected through legal action in the courts
  • 1,289 prosecutions for tax offences
  • tax credits error and fraud losses reduced to 4.4% - the lowest ever

2.2 Savings

We made a further 拢210 million in sustainable cost savings last year, exceeding the target the government set us.

  • 170 HMRC offices, compared to 539 in 2005.
  • 19 million fewer sheets of paper printed
  • 8 out of 10 of our workforce located in our 16 key centres

2.3 Improving our service

10.2 million Self Assessment returns were submitted by midnight on 31 January 2015, a record 85.5% of which were online

  • 71,727 customers helped by our new Needs Extra Support service
  • 2.4 million businesses subscribed to Your Tax Account
  • 410,000 tax credits customers renewed their claims online
