The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (the department) received the following request for information which we responded to under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA):
Please provide any chat GPT prompts and responses made in an official capacity by the ministers in your department since 5 July 2024. If this is going over cost limits, please just provide the data for the Secretary of State.
1. Our response
We can confirm that the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (the department) does hold some information in scope of your request.
1.1 Section 21: This information is accessible to you by other means
You can access some of the information relating to the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology here:
FOI2025-00120: Plain text copy of Peter Kyle鈥檚 ChatGPT history
Other ministers in the department have not used ChatGPT in an official capacity.
Because the information is already reasonably accessible to you, technically it is withheld under section 21 of the FOIA.
Section 21 states:
(1) Information which is reasonably accessible to the applicant otherwise than under section 1 is exempt information.
Section 21(1) is an absolute exemption under the FOIA therefore we are not required to conduct a public interest test when withholding this information.
