These estimates of the incidence of first-ever strokes in England between 2007 and 2016 used data from the Health Improvement Network鈥檚 general practice database to make the calculations.

The briefing document reports on:

  • the estimated total number of first strokes in England in 2016
  • trends in incidence
  • differences in stroke incidence by age, gender, ethnicity and deprivation.

The technical document explains how the estimates were created.
