Details

Financial instruments are an alternative to traditional grant funding and unlike grants the ERDF paid to the final beneficiary is repayable, thereby creating a 鈥楲egacy鈥� which can be re-invested. There are 3 main types of funding delivered through financial instruments:

  • Equity / Quasi-equity
  • Loan
  • Guarantee

The requirement for each financial instrument project in the 2014 to 2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programme to undertake an ex-ante assessment was introduced in the European Commission鈥檚 Common Provisions Regulation in 2013. The objective is to promote the use of sound evidence-based decision making when designing and implementing these projects.

These documents only relate to the ERDF.

The ERDF programme continues to invest in projects after the transition period ended on 31 December 2020. All funding must finish by the end of 2023.
