The Defeating Ebola conference in London has rallied global support to contain, control and defeat Ebola in Sierra Leone.
The following is a summary of pledges. It does not contain all pledges made during the conference.
0.1 United Kingdom
The UK government has already committed 拢125 million to tackle the disease. This includes supporting 700 treatment beds to help up to 8,800 patients over six months.
In addition, the UK will trial new Ebola community care programme units to isolate Ebola cases more quickly and highlight the risk of infection during traditional burial rites.
A selection of other pledges made today (converted to 拢):
1. Donor governments
1.1 Cuba
Pledged to train and deploy 165 health professionals to Sierra Leone.
1.2 Australia
拢6.2 million pledged to UN trust fund. This is in addition to the 拢1.2 million already pledged to UK efforts.
1.3 Canada
拢18.6 million will be provided.
1.4 Finland
A further 拢744,000 in addition to Finland鈥檚 existing 拢620,000 to region through WHO and IFRC.
1.5 Germany
Pledged to provide additional support.
1.6 Ireland
Additional contribution based on needs assessment, with a focus on medical treatment facilities in Sierra Leone. This is in addition to 42 tons of supplies that have been airlifted and 拢784,000 already committed.
1.7 Italy
New announcement of 拢3.1 million. This is in addition to a contribution of 拢345,750 to WHO and creation of a fund of 拢940,000 for bilateral actions.
1.8 Japan
Providing personal protection equipment kits.
1.9 Norway
Providing physicians and nurses and considering other support.
1.10 South Korea
Further financial support and possibly provision of equipment.
1.11 Sweden
Looking into establishing logistics support and considering medevac.
1.12 Switzerland
拢3.25 million pledged.
1.13 The Philippines
Considering provision of healthcare workers.
2. Multilateral organisations
2.1 African Development Bank
A further 拢94.9 million package of grants and loans has been approved on 1 October, of which 拢31 million will go to Sierra Leone.
3. NGOs and Foundations
3.1 Children鈥檚 Investment Fund Foundation
Pledged 拢12.4 million, 拢7.75 million of which is new. 拢9.3 million of which for Sierra Leone.
3.2 Comic Relief
Announced new funding of 拢1 million at the conference.
3.3 M茅decins du Monde
Announced 拢2.75 million for a regional programme including training, community mobilisation and strengthening health systems.
3.4 Oxfam
Pledged to increase their efforts to reach 2.5 million people with clean water and sanitation and public health messages. They will provide WASH facilities in the new health units and laboratories, water kiosks, safe water points, disinfection services and solid waste management.
3.5 Save the Children
Will launch a 拢44 million appeal, with 拢25 million for Sierra Leone.
4. Private sector
4.1 GlaxoSmithKline
Further support of around 拢300,000 for Save the Children鈥檚 efforts on Ebola. This is in addition to what they have already contributed (拢130,000 cash and 拢500,000 in kind donations) as well as restating their accelerated efforts on our Ebola vaccine candidate.
4.2 Ebola Private Sector Mobilisation Group
EPSMG is a self-started coalition of 39 private sector companies operating in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea who made an announcement of support and continued trade and investment in these countries. The main organisation working on operational support in Sierra Leone is London Mining.
