1. Oral
1.1 Compass
To correct a sextant into which has been introduced one or more of perpendicularity, side or index errors.
- To find the index error of a sextant.
- Candidates will also he questioned on the care and use of chronometers.
1.2 Meteorology
- Steps to be taken in the event of ice accretion.
- Navigation聽in,聽or聽in聽the聽vicinity, of聽ice.
1.3 Seamanship
- Exceptional circumstances. Loss or fouling of rudder and/ or propeller. Emergency steering arrangements. Action to be taken following collision or sustaining damage of聽any kind.聽Action聽to聽be taken on grounding聽- methods聽or聽refloating, surveys聽subject聽 to聽refloating. Beaching聽a聽fishing聽vessel.
- Steps to be taken when disabled and in distress. Preservation of passengers and crew in the event of wreck. Abandoning聽ship;聽survival procedure. Communications with the shore. The use of rockets and rocket apparatus.
- The聽safety聽of聽the聽vessel,聽crew聽and聽other聽personnel.聽Assistance of聽vessels聽in distress. Duties in the case of strandings, collisions聽or other accidents.
- Assisting a聽ship or聽aircraft聽in聽distress.聽The use聽of聽direction聽finding聽for聽homing聽on聽to a casualty. Rescuing聽the crew of a disabled ship聽or ditched aircraft. The launching of boats and life-rafts. A practical knowledge of search and rescue procedures including a thorough knowledge of the MERSAR manual.
- Bad聽weather聽manoeuvres.聽Extra聽precautions聽to be聽taken聽before聽the聽onset of聽heavy weather.聽The聽effect聽of聽current, wind,聽shallow water and draught on manoeuvring. Precautions at anchor and at sea. Use of oil. Ship聽manoeuvring and handling, anchoring and working anchors and cables in all circumstances. Approaching聽rivers and harbours and manoeuvring therein. Means to employ to keep聽a disabled or unmanageable vessel out of the trough of the sea and to lessen the lee drift.
- Towing and being lowed. Lloyds open form of agreement.
- Prevention聽of聽fire聽at聽sea聽and in port, action to be聽taken聽to prevent the spread聽of聽fire, full聽knowledge of聽the聽use聽of fire appliances and聽the precautions to be taken in their use.
- Routine inspection of living quarters and store rooms.
- An outline knowledge of the relevant regulations concerning Life Saving Equipment and fire fighting appliances.
- A thorough knowledge of sate working practices in fishing聽vessels including a general knowledge of the relevant parts of the Health and Safety at Work Act. The Recommended Code of Safety for Fishermen and IMO publications.
- A full knowledge of the content and application of the Collision Regulations and those Annexes concerned with safe navigation. Candidates聽will聽not聽be聽placed聽in聽a聽position聽of聽handling聽a聽sailing聽craft, but聽will聽be聽expected聽to聽recognise聽the聽lights carried聽by聽such craft and to have a knowledge of the possible manoeuvres according聽to the direction of the wind.
- Distress and pilot signals: penalties for misuse.
- A thorough knowledge of safe working practices in fishing vessels including a general knowledge of the contents of MSA 鈥楳erchant Shipping Notices鈥� applicable to fishing vessels and Admiralty 鈥楴otices to Mariners鈥�. The use of Admiralty 鈥楴otices to Mariners鈥�. A knowledge of the Recommended Code of Safety聽for Fishermen.
- IALA buoyage systems A and B.
- Portable radio equipment. The preparation and use of portable radio equipment as used in lifeboats and life-rafts including erection of aerials and knowledge of the facilities and frequencies provided wi1h the equipment
- Port Radio Information Services. Knowledge of the types of service available to aid vessels entering ports and assist in berthing as indicated in Admiralty List of Radio Signals 鈥楶ort Radio Stations and Pilot Vessels鈥�.
1.4 Stowage, Construction and Stability
- Dry聽docking聽and slipping, general procedure聽and precautions聽to聽be聽observed, distribution of weight. bilge聽blocks, leaving a vessel water-borne.
1.5 Prevention of pollution of the marine environment
- Measures to be taken to prevent the spillage of oil during聽bunkering or oil transfer.
