Guidance on civil appeals office fees for unrepresented litigants - from 30 September 2021
The following fees are currently payable for cases filed under part 52 of the Civil Procedure Rules.
Where permission to appeal or an extension of time for appealing (or both) are applied for:
- filing an appellant鈥檚 notice or
- filing an appellant鈥檚 notice where the respondent is appealing
Fee - 拢626
The notice must be stamped with the fee.
Where permission to appeal is not required or has been granted by the lower court on:
- filing an appellant鈥檚 notice or
- filing an appellant鈥檚 notice where the respondent is appealing
- the appellant or respondent is filing an appeal questionnaire
Fee - 拢1,421
The notice must be stamped with the fee unless it relates to an appeal questionnaire, in which case the appeal questionnaire must be stamped with the fee.
On filing a respondent鈥檚 notice where the respondent wishes to ask the appeal court to uphold the order of the lower court for reasons different from or additional to those given by the lower court.

The notice must be stamped with the fee.
On filing an application notice
Fee - 拢626 (This fee is not payable in relation to an application made in an appellant鈥檚 notice or respondent鈥檚 notice)
The notice must be stamped with the fee.
Paying the court fee
If you are not legally represented and you are not using the E-filing service, you will need to pay the court fee using one of the following methods:
Credit or debit card over the phone. Tel: 020 3936 8957 Mon to Fri 10am to 4pm.

In person at the Fees Office in the Royal Courts of Justice. Tel: 020 8936 8957 to book an appointment.
By post to Civil Appeals Office Registry Room 308, 3rd floor East Block Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London WC2A 2LL. Only post a cheque or postal orders. Do not send cash.
If you are using the E-filing service, you can pay the court fee online. /government/publications/how-to-use-the-hmcts-e-filing-service
The fee must be paid before the expiry of any relevant time limit.
If you are in receipt of benefits and:
- are not able to claim legal aid or
- you can demonstrate severe financial hardship
You may be entitled to remission of the court fees.
