The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC) reviewed the evidence on this subject. They recommend that guidance to medical assessors and decision makers be changed where a case exists for recognising the prescribed disease (PD) D11 in a coalminer with primary lung cancer.
The following conditions must apply:
- the diagnosis of silicosis can be sustained
- it can be shown that the individual鈥檚 work has involved 鈥榯unnelling in, or quarrying sandstone or granite鈥 (PD D11(b))
Equally, a coalminer who meets the terms of pneumoconiosis (PD D1(1)) can also be considered to satisfy the exposure requirements of PD D11(b).
