Birmingham Women鈥檚 and Children鈥檚 NHS Foundation Trust has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

Application number NPS/WR/043562 is for a full licence to abstract water from underground strata known as Non-artesian Sherwood Sandstone at Birmingham Children鈥檚 Hospital, Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham, at National Grid References (NGRs) SP 07312 87505, SP 07358 87444 and SP 07317 87401.

Application number NPS/WR/043562 is to abstract water as follows:

  • 281 cubic metres an hour

  • 6,739 cubic metres a day

  • 1,400,000 cubic metres a year

Application number NPS/WR/043699 is for a full licence to abstract water from underground strata known as Non-artesian Sherwood Sandstone at Birmingham Women鈥檚 Hospital, Mindelsohn Way, Birmingham at NGRs SP 03895 83840, SP 03959 83844, SP 03996 83844, and SP 04033 83849.

Application number NPS/WR/043699 is to abstract water as follows:

  • 208 cubic metres an hour

  • 4,977 cubic metres a day

  • 600,000 cubic metres a year

The water abstracted at each site will be used for operating open loop ground source heat pump systems. Water abstracted under each proposed licence will be injected back into the same groundwater body it was abstracted from once it has passed through the heat pump system. Associated water quality permits have been applied for (reference numbers EPR/WB3545KT and EPR/BB3046KM).
