Details

Vets can use this form to submit samples from birds for export, import or quarantine purposes to test for:

  • avian influenza
  • Newcastle disease
  • general virus isolation and serology

You can provide additional samples or information with the ancillary submission form (APHA5).

Testing is carried out by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

If you suspect bird flu (avian influenza) or Newcastle disease, you must report it immediately by calling:

  • 03000 200 301 if you鈥檙e in England
  • 03003 038 268 if you鈥檙e in Wales
  • your local聽Field Services Office聽if you鈥檙e in Scotland

Bird flu is a聽notifiable disease聽in poultry and other captive birds. If you do not report it, you鈥檙e breaking the law.

You must follow the rules for聽packaging and sending pathological material.

How to pay

You enter into a contract with聽APHA聽when the Veterinary Investigation Centre receives your sample and submission form.

You will be sent an invoice with instructions on how to set up an account to make payment. You must pay within 28 days of the date of invoice.聽APHA聽reserves the right to withhold services for accounts in arrears.

Receiving your test results

Check the price list for the maximum processing time for each test.

Test results are returned as soon as possible. If you need the findings urgently, you should include this on the form.

Reports are sent by email. You can ask for the report to be sent by post. Reports sent by special delivery will result in extra charges and you will need to ask the centre for this service. You can also ask that results are sent to recipients other than yourself.
