About us
AWE Nuclear Security Technologies purpose is to protect the UK through nuclear science and technology. Our mission is to design and manufacture warheads and provide nuclear services to meet the needs of defence.
Responsibilities
AWE Nuclear Security Technologies exists to support national security and deliver a secure future not only for everybody in the UK, but for our allies too.
Priorities
Our work to supply and service the warheads that support the Government’s policy to maintain a continuous at-sea deterrent 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, discourages the most severe threats to our nation, and to our allies.
We’re also proud to provide our unique skills and expertise to support counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction for example, our ability to distinguish seismic signals generated by underground nuclear explosions from those generated by earthquakes.
This work, beyond our core warhead programme, goes even further to protect the UK, our allies, and the commitments made in the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty a legally binding global ban on nuclear explosive testing.
Who we are
In July 2021, AWE plc became a non-departmental public body owned by the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Our Chief Executive Officer is accountable to the Chief of Defence Nuclear at the MOD.
We’re regulated by the Office for Nuclear Regulation, the UK’s independent nuclear regulator for safety, security and safeguards, and the Environment Agency, who look at all aspects of AWE Nuclear Security Technologies operations that may impact our environment.
