UK and Paraguay sign agreement for Chevening/BECAL scholarships
The agreement will enable up to 18 Paraguayan scholars to study in the UK in 2016/17

Ambassador Hobbs and Santiago Pe帽a sign the agreement
On 30 December Ambassador Jeremy Hobbs signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Paraguay鈥檚 Carlos Antonio Lopez (BECAL) national scholarship programme. Minister of Finance Santiago Pe帽a signed on behalf of BECAL in a ceremony held at the Finance Ministry.
The agreement with immediate effect provides up to 18 awards for Paraguayan scholars to study at British Universities in the academic period 2016/17.
It is worth highlighting that the Chevening programme funded only one Paraguayan scholar when the British Embassy re-opened in 2013.
Currently 9 Chevening scholars are studying a masters course in the UK . Separately BECAL has already awarded 10 scholarships for study at British universities.
Minister of Finance said 鈥淯niting forces with an organisation like Chevening will enable Paraguayan students to access universities of huge prestige and of superior academic level which will benefit Paraguay鈥檚 human capital鈥.
Ambassador Hobbs said that 鈥淚nvesting in young people was the best investment the British government could make in the future of Paraguay鈥.
