Umthombo Surf Project, led by Tom Hewitt, took four street children on a surfing tour to the UK this past June.

Umthombo Surf Project, led by Tom Hewitt, took four street children on a surfing tour to the UK this past June. The surfers participated in a number of events during their 4 week stay in the UK including speaking (and surfing) in Cornwall, Devon and Wales, attending fundraisers, in London and one on a river boat on the Thames.
Umthombo is a Street Child NGO operating in Durban which aims to promote, amoungst others, health awareness and personal development using surf coaching to encourage participation. 鈥淲hen I surf I feel like I am flying. I am far above street life.鈥� Khotso, age 15, former street child part of Umthombo. Over the years the surf programme has seen several 鈥榞raduates鈥� find gainful employment in the popular surfing sector.
