Letter to The Times from Emma Howard Boyd, Chair of the Environment Agency
Full version of the letter from the Chair in response to The Times article, "Eye of the Storm".
Your leading article (鈥淓ye of the Storm鈥, 18 February) entirely ignores the incredible work undertaken by Environment Agency staff who have been working around the clock to protect over 85,000 properties from the severe weather and record breaking river levels we have seen this winter. This 鈥榚mergency response鈥 from our operational staff is vitally important in helping protect people and the environment.
We agree a long term view is needed to prepare for the climate of the future. That鈥檚 why last year we published a draft flood strategy which looks at the next 30 years. It is both the 鈥榠nstrument for change鈥 and strategic priority-setting you say we should be doing. Our approach includes building defences but also means avoiding inappropriate development in the floodplain, working with nature to slow the flow of water and ensuring our homes, businesses and infrastructure are designed and built to be more resilient.
