The Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has welcomed today鈥檚 announcement that Babcock - which manages her Majesty鈥檚 Naval Bases at Devonport and Clyde - have been awarded a 拢2.6 billion contract as part of a package of 拢3.2 billion of contracts to manage the UK鈥檚 Naval Bases and maintain and repair the Royal Navy鈥檚 warships. This will directly sustain around 1,500 jobs at Faslane and more than 7,500 jobs across the UK.
Mr Carmichael said:
This is a huge investment in Scotland鈥檚 largest single site employer. It will support hundreds of skilled workers, their families as well as providing a substantial boost to the local economy along the Clyde.
In the years ahead on the back of the security provided by this contact, I have absolutely no doubts that the workforce at Faslane will continue to excel in providing skills, expertise and support for the Royal Navy鈥檚 activities across the globe.
This is the second largest defence contract placed by this government and underlines the UK Government鈥檚 long term commitment to the defence industry in Scotland and to our dedicated and talented workforce.
