CEN update: information affecting chemical measurements

Standards and technical documents published by CEN that affect those carrying out chemical measurement in support of regulation.

Anyone carrying out chemical measurement in support of regulation should be aware of the following standards and technical documents published by CEN during April and May 2015.

- Cereals - Determination of moisture and protein - Method using Near-Infrared-Spectroscopy in whole kernels.

- Liquid petroleum products - Determination of hydrocarbon types and oxygenates via multidimensional gas chromatography method - Round Robin research report. This Technical Report is published as background information to judge the approval of the use of the method for the determination of all oxygenates as mentioned in the European Fuels Directive and should also support the use of multidimensional chromatography as the method for disputes on oxygenates in EN 228.

- Solid biofuels - Determination of total content of sulfur and chlorine. The standard specifies two methods for digestion of the fuel and different analytical techniques for the quantification of the elements in the digest solutions.

- Leather - Chemical tests for the determination of certain azo colorants in dyed leathers - Part 1: Determination of certain aromatic amines derived from azo colorants, specifying a method for determining the use of certain azo colorants which may release certain aromatic amines.

- Characterization of waste - Preparation of test portions from the laboratory sample, which is applicable for the preparation of representative test portions from the laboratory sample that has been taken according to the sampling plan (EN 14899), prior to physical and/or chemical analysis (e.g. preparation of eluates, extractions, digestion and/or analytical determinations) of solid (including monolithic material) and liquid samples and sludge.

- Food analysis - Determination of acrylamide in food by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS).

- Food analysis - Determination of benzo[a]pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, chrysene and benzo[b]fluoranthene in foodstuffs by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS).

- Food analysis - Determination of furan in coffee and coffee products by headspace gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (HS GC-MS).

- Solid biofuels - Determination of major elements - Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, P, K, Si, Na and Ti. Other elements (e.g. Ba, Mn) can also be determined using this procedure.

- Nanomaterials - Quantification of nano-object release from powders by generation of aerosols.

- Nanotechnology - Nanoparticles in powder form - Characteristics and measurements.

- Animal and vegetable fats and oils - Gas chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters - Part 1: Guidelines on modern gas chromatography of fatty acid methyl esters.

- Fertilizers - Determination of N-(n-Butyl)thiophosphoric acid triamide (NBPT) and N-(n-Propyl)thiophosphoric acid triamide (NPPT) - Method using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

- Solid biofuels - Determination of total content of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen.

- Rice - Determination of amylose content - Part 1: Reference method.

- Rice - Determination of amylose content - Part 2: Routine methods.
