British Army supports Moroccan hospital
A new playground was built in Rabat Children鈥檚 Hospital thanks to money raised by a British soldier, Sergeant Aaron Smith.
On 29 November 2013, a new playground was opened at Rabat Children鈥檚 Hospital in Rabat at a ribbon-cutting ceremony organised by the Association of Friends of Children鈥檚 Hospitals.
The playground was built over the last 10 days thanks to funds raised by a British soldier Sergeant Aaron Smith from the Royal Regiment of Gibraltar. Following an earlier visit to Mroocco, Sergeant Smith decided he wanted to help a local charity. He raised the money to build and equip the Rabat Children鈥檚 Hospital playground through a series of endurance challenges, including:
- Running the Edinburgh Marathon in Scotland;
- Running 42km on a treadmill alongside another member of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment;
- A team challenge of running for 24 hours non-stop on a treadmill, completed jointly with three other members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, Sgt Stephen Llufrio, Cpl Chris Milliken and LCpl Jack Nichols;
Deputy British Ambassador to Morocco, Alan Gogbashian said: 鈥淚 am very pleased that a member of the British Army 鈥� Sergeant Aaron Smith, from the Royal Regiment of Gibraltar 鈥� contributed to this great initiative in favour of children at Rabat Children鈥檚 Hospital. We are conscious of the huge challenges faced by the Hospital and Association in order to improve the lives of sick children. We are delighted to be able to contribute to strengthening the excellent relations between United Kingdom and Morocco every time an opportunity allows it.鈥�
