Ambassador urges Italians to prepare for new UK immigration rules

Rules change on 1 January 2021

The鈥疷K Government has launched a Europe-wide awareness campaign to help prepare鈥疎uropean citizens鈥痜or鈥痶he implementation of the UK鈥檚 new Immigration System from 1 January 2021, and the launch of new routes on 1 December 2020.

Free movement鈥痓etween the EU and the UK鈥痺ill end at 11pm on 31 December鈥疎EA and Swiss citizens will no longer have the automatic right to live in the UK.鈥�

The UK will introduce a new, points-based immigration system鈥痶hat treats people from all parts of the world鈥痚qually,鈥痯rioritising鈥痵kills and talent over where a person comes from.鈥�

Italian nationals who do not already live in the UK, or have rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, will need to meet specific requirements鈥痑nd apply for a visa through the new immigration system,鈥痠n order to study or work in the UK.鈥�

The campaign, which has been translated to cater for all鈥痭ationalities,鈥� is set to run across various channels鈥痶hroughout November and into December, with a second phase planned for early 2021.

It鈥痚ncourages Italian citizens to visit the UK鈥疓overnment鈥痺ebsite where further information鈥痑bout how they can apply to work or study in the UK鈥痠s available.鈥�

Under the new rules, EU citizens will be able to continue to visit the UK without applying for a visa鈥痑nd in most cases, will be鈥痑ble鈥痶o stay for up to 6 months.鈥疶he changes will not impact the rights of those鈥痺ho have been granted status through the EU Settlement Scheme.鈥�

鈥淥ur new system sends a message to the whole world that Britain is open for business.鈥疻e want to continue to encourage top talent from around the world and indeed from Italy, to bring their skills to the UK.鈥�

鈥淲e want to welcome the talented students from Italy who will no doubt benefit from studying at our world leading universities.鈥�

鈥淚t鈥檚 important Italians know about how changes will impact them coming to the UK and I would urge everyone to take the time鈥痶o see what they need to.鈥濃�

The awareness campaign will direct people to information鈥痑bout the changes on the UK Government鈥檚 website, which has been translated into Italian and 23 other different languages.鈥�

Italian nationals looking to move to the UK after 31 December 2020 should visit gov.uk.
