Joint Doctrine
The Joint Doctrine team is responsible for NATO and UK strategic and operational doctrine.
The Joint Doctrine team writes authoritative, threat-informed聽North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)聽and UK strategic and operational-level doctrine to inform professional military education and guide operations.
The team work with a range of cross-government and international organisations including: Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office; United Nations; and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
By聽putting 鈥楴ATO聽at the heart of UK Defence鈥� the team are able to achieve聽maximum coherence and interoperability with and between the UK鈥檚 closest聽allies and partners.
Where possible聽NATO聽doctrine聽is adopted rather than producing national doctrine.
Publications include:
- Allied joint publications (AJPs)聽- doctrine for聽NATO聽operations.
- Joint doctrine publications (JDPs)聽- fully endorsed UK national doctrine.
- Joint doctrine notes (JDNs)聽- raised to either encourage debate, place 鈥榤arkers in the sand鈥� or capture and disseminate best practice. They are not endorsed national doctrine.
- Handbooks, primers and guides
