The government announced at Budget 2014 that it will consult on creating a new 鈥楻ight to Build鈥�, giving custom builders a right to a plot from councils.

The Right to Build is an extension of the government鈥檚 planning reforms. However, given the difficulty custom builders often have finding suitable land, we want to go further by giving prospective local custom builders the right to a suitable plot of land to build a new home with the help of their local planning authority.

In September 2014 the government announced that 11 local authorities would become Right to Build 鈥榲anguards鈥�. This will involve local planning authorities operating the Right to Build model on a voluntary basis to test how it will work in practice.

This consultation meets the government鈥檚 commitment, and seeks views from local planning authorities, the custom build sector and prospective custom builders themselves about the best way of constructing such a Right.
