Road traffic signs, signals and road markings need to be simple and concise so people can understand them quickly. The Department for Transport produces regulations and guidance to make sure that traffic authorities use traffic signs and road markings correctly.
Traffic signs regulations
The (TSRGD), prescribe the designs and conditions of use for traffic signs to be lawfully placed on or near roads in England, Scotland and Wales.
Traffic signs images and drawings
鈥楾raffic signs images鈥� contains images of traffic signs for use by media professionals producing online or printed matter. These images can鈥檛 be used as templates to manufacture traffic signs.
鈥楾raffic signs working drawings鈥� detail the design of all traffic signs from the TSRGD. The working drawings are for use by traffic sign professionals manufacturing traffic signs.
If there isn鈥檛 a suitable prescribed sign in the TSRGD, local traffic authorities can apply to the Department for Transport for authorisation to use a .
Guidance on the correct use of signs, signals and road markings
The Department for Transport provides guidance to traffic authorities and their agents on the correct use of signs and road markings. Nothing in this guidance, however, overrides the TSRGD.
