Mental Health Bill 2025
Information relating to the Mental Health Bill which was introduced in the House of Lords on 6 November 2024.
The Mental Health Bill delivers on the government manifesto commitment to modernise mental health legislation to give patients greater choice, autonomy, enhanced rights and support, and ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect throughout treatment.
This legislation is intended to give effect to the policy approaches outlined in Sir Simon Wessely鈥檚 landmark聽Independent Review聽in 2018.
These were subsequently taken forward in the previous government鈥檚 white paper聽Reforming the Mental Health Act聽in 2021.
These measures aim to give people greater control over their treatment and help ensure they receive the dignity and respect they deserve.
