Making Tax Digital for Income Tax for individuals: step by step

Find out how to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and how to sign up your business if you鈥檙e eligible.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a new way of reporting income and expenses if you鈥檙e a sole trader or landlord. You鈥檒l need to use software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax to:

  • create, store and correct digital records of your business income and expenses
  • send your quarterly updates to HMRC
  • submit your tax return and pay tax due by 31 January the following year

Who needs to sign up

You will need to use聽Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if all of the following apply. You:

  • are an individual registered for聽Self Assessment
  • get income from self-employment or property, or both
  • have qualifying income of more than 拢30,000

If your qualifying income is over 拢20,000 or you鈥檙e an individual in a business partnership, you鈥檒l need to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax in the future. We鈥檒l set out the timeline for these at a later date.
