£50m investment for travel improvements in CornwallÌý(Levelling Up Fund 2)
Almost £50 million from the Levelling Up Fund has been allocated to the Mid Cornwall Metro project.
The Mid Cornwall Metro (MCM) links the north and south coast of Cornwall by providing an hourly direct train service on the existing railway line. This connects four of Cornwall’s largest urban areas: Newquay, St Austell, Truro and Falmouth/Penryn.Ìý
Improvements to the Newquay Branch LineÌý
£32 million has been allocated for improvements on the Newquay Branch Line. This will ensure more frequent services and capacity between Newquay, Falmouth and intercity services. Improvements include:Ìý
- a new platform at Newquay StationÌý
- a new passing loop on the Newquay branch line at Tregoss MoorÌý
- a new signalling panel at GoonbarrowÌý
- a new accessible lift bridge at Par StationÌý
- upgrades to level crossingsÌý
- extended platforms at Falmouth Docks and Falmouth Town StationsÌý
Improving travel to and from the stationÌýÌý
£18 million is allocated to ‘first and last mileâ€� measures that are designed to improve people’s journeys to and from stations along the MCM. This includes:Ìý
- mobility measures and station side passenger improvements, including new toiletsÌýÌý
- improved streetscape and a new walking and cycling network linking Falmouth to PenrynÌýÌý
- e-bike hire linking rail stations with town centres, student facilities, and new areas of housingÌý
- area traffic management and travel improvements to Bugle and Roche stationsÌý
- extension of the ‘tap on/ tap offâ€� digital ticket system across a number of stationsÌý
A cleaner, greener, fairer and more inclusive CornwallÌý
The MCM will ‘Level Upâ€� access to jobs, skills, education and amenities in one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in the UK. This will support economic growth across the region.Ìý
