Check with your local council to find out if you need to register to run a business as a hairdresser or barber in England.

You may have to register with your local council so that they can check you鈥檙e following health and safety rules. They may charge you a fee and inspect your premises before they give you a certificate of registration.

If you do need to register, you鈥檒l need to display a copy of your certificate where it can be easily seen by your customers. Your council will also tell if you need to display a copy of any local byelaws.

Health and safety

Even if your council doesn鈥檛 need you to register, you鈥檒l still have to comply with local byelaws relating to:

  • making sure your premises are clean, well lit and properly ventilated
  • taking precautions against infection or contamination
  • making sure your staff work hygienically and use equipment efficiently
  • getting public liability insurance cover
