Overview

You can no longer apply for a derivative residence card.

If you applied on or before 31 December 2020, your application will still be considered.

If you already have a card, it is no longer valid.

To continue living in the UK, you need another type of permission to stay, such as settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.

If your card has not yet expired, you can use it as proof of identity when you apply to the EU Settlement Scheme.

The deadline to apply for most people was 30 June 2021. You鈥檒l still be able to apply if you have reasonable grounds for why you could not apply by the deadline. For example, you have a medical condition, or were the victim of domestic violence.

You must also be one of the following:

  • the primary carer of either a British citizen or someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
  • a child of the primary carer of a British citizen or someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
  • a child of someone from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein who used to live and work in the UK - you must be in some form of education to be eligible

Being a 鈥榩rimary carer鈥 means you鈥檙e someone鈥檚 main carer, or you share the responsibility with someone else at least equally, and you鈥檙e their direct relative or legal guardian.
