You can use the British Forces Post Office (BFPO) to send a letter or parcel to:

• serving armed forces personnel and their families
• an employee of the Ministry of Defence (MOD), or another official organisation, who鈥檚 entitled to use BFPO

How to use the BFPO

You must:

1. Check how to address BFPO mail.

2. Check the list of what you cannot send.

3. If you鈥檙e sending a parcel, fill out a customs declaration form.

Consider the best way to post your item听based on the value, cost, size and weight.

Allow plenty of time for your post to arrive. It can take several weeks.

Maximum weights

The most your parcel can weigh is usually:

• 20kg if you post it at a Post Office
• 30kg if you order something with a UK-based online retailer

Some destinations have a lower weight limit.

Do not write anything else on the packaging.

You cannot use pre-printed Royal Mail postage labels, for example Click and Drop, to send post to the UK from overseas.

Address format

For family members start with:

For non-service personnel start with:

STAFF NUMBER (if available) NAME

You must complete a customs declaration if you鈥檙e sending a parcel. Write clearly and stick it to the outside of your post so it鈥檚 easy to read.

You must use either:

• for contents worth up to 拢270
• for contents worth more than 拢270

If you鈥檙e a business, you must add a commodity code (also known as Harmonised Systems Code) to the customs form. Check which code you need.

The cost of using British Forces Post Office (BFPO) depends on the size and weight of the letter or parcel you鈥檙e sending.

If you鈥檙e posting your parcel at a post office, it must weigh less than 20kg.

BFPO cannot deliver post by a certain time or date.

You can send parcels to a BFPO address outside of the UK at a Post Office using Royal Mail.

Parcels can be up to 20kg.

Cost depends on the size of the parcel.

You must make a customs declaration if you鈥檙e sending a parcel with BFPO.

You cannot use ParcelForce to send parcels with BFPO unless you have a business account with them. If you have an account, you can send parcels up to 30kg.

Insuring your post in case of loss or damage

You should always:

• ask for proof of posting at the Post Office
• keep proof of how much your item is worth

If your post is lost or damaged you may be able to claim standard compensation up to 拢20.

If your item is worth more than 拢20, you can pay for extra cover at the Post Office using:

• - this allows you to claim compensation up to 拢50
• - this allows you claim compensation up to 拢2500听

You cannot take out Royal Mail Consequential Loss cover when you post something with BFPO.

Not all UK online retailers are able to send things to a BFPO address. Check with the retailer before you order anything.

Your online order must:

• weigh less than 30kg
• have a length, depth and width that adds up to less than 2 metres, a single side must not be more than 1 metre 5cm

If you are ordering online, allow plenty of time for your order to be delivered.

Do not use a BFPO address that starts with BF1 when you order online.

When the retailer posts your order

They should:

• check how to address BFPO mail
• attach a customs declaration or commercial invoice to the outside of the parcel听
• include commodity codes on the customs form - they can check which code to use
• insure any goods they send in case of loss or damage听
• charge you UK postage rates, not international delivery prices

They can post your mail using Post Office, Royal Mail, Parcel Force or an approved courier company from the following list:

Some retailers have a special arrangement for posting mail with BFPO - this is called Commercial Receipts. They can email BFPO if they want to set this up.

Sending orders to Cyprus or the Falkland Islands

If you are online shopping and your order will be delivered to Cyprus or the Falkland Islands, the retailer can use a premium service to post your order.

Your order must:

• weigh less than 30kg
• have a length, depth and width that adds up to less than 3 metres, a single side must not be more than 1 metre 50cm

Leave plenty of time for your order to be delivered.

You cannot send some items in BFPO mail, including:

• alcohol
• arms and ammunition (includes toy guns if posting to a BFPO 5000 series address or an address in the United States, Canada or Australasia)
• batteries
• Christmas crackers
• financial documents that you cannot replace if lost (not including bank statements or cards)
• flammable liquids (except up to 150ml of perfume or aftershave to UK locations)
• fragile items
• indecent, obscene or offensive material
• liquids classified as dangerous goods
• over 1 litre of liquids per parcel
• prescription medicines and drugs sent for scientific purposes
• pressurised containers (including aerosols like deodorants and shaving foams or gels)
• blades, sharp items and instruments (including razor blades, scissors, kitchen knives or utensils)

If you send these items, your whole parcel may be delayed or returned to you.

You can send letters (also known as 鈥榖lueys鈥�) and parcels for free to service personnel who are on certain ships or operations through the enduring families free mail service. Check which operations and ships are eligible.

You can only use this service to send mail to people that you know.

How to use the service

Address your letter or parcel using the same address format as other BFPO mail.

You must include:

• a return address
• a customs declaration form with a tick in the box marked 鈥榞ift鈥�

Post your letter at either a Post Box or Post Office.

Post your parcel at a Post Office.

Size and weight

Your letter or parcel must be at least 9cm by 14cm. The length, depth and width must not add up to more than 90cm. A single side must not be more than 60cm.

Your parcel must not weigh more than 2kg.

What you cannot send

You cannot send:

• pressurised containers, such as aerosols, shaving foam or alcohol
• items worth more than 拢20 or 鈧�25

You may be able to claim compensation if your post:

• does not arrive within 30 working days听
• is damaged when it arrives听

You must make your claim within 80 days of the date you posted the item.

How much you can claim

You can claim the money you paid for postage plus the value of any items lost.

You can claim up to:

• 拢20 for items posted at a Post Office - includes the enduring families free mail service
• 拢100 for items posted with Parcel Force

You may be able to claim extra compensation if you paid for this at the time of posting.

If a company or retailer sent the item then you should check with them.

Who can claim

The person who sent the post should make the claim.

If you bought something online, the retailer who posted the item should make the claim.

How to make a claim

If you are in the UK, you can either:

• collect a lost or damaged claim form from your local Post Office听
• ask the BFPO service desk to send you a form by email

Fill in the form and send it to the BFPO service desk, along with any supporting documents.

What to include in your claim

You鈥檒l need to provide:

• the delivery name and address
• the name and address of the sender
• which postal service you used and any tracking numbers
• when and where you posted the item
• proof of postage
• proof of purchase 鈥� to show how much the item that was lost or damaged was worth
• if you鈥檙e claiming for damage, pictures of the damage and original packaging
